Bulk Edit Documents Within a Thread
IN THIS ARTICLE:
To bulk edit selected documents or perform other mass actions on your selections in the Thread Viewer, check the boxes of the emails in the chain to select, then click EDIT. The bulk edit modal window displays and fields from the default Relativity layout are shown automatically. For the Bulk Update modal, the settings you apply remain "sticky" when you navigate to other documents or even between sessions for the same user. When you select one or more emails in the thread, the checkmarks carry over to the relational items pane unless the relational pane spans multiple pages. When you check nodes or messages in the conversation view, it corresponds to a check in the relational pane. From the relational pane, you can do a mass action, like edit, that pops open the mass edit function in Relativity. There are some limitations to this; however, on very large thread groups, map edit functionality is limited if spanning multiple pages. Bulk editing within the MA Thread Viewer, however, does not have a document count threshold. See the article, Email Threading Details, for a complete discussion of the terms used in this article.
Selecting to edit
Click the box to the top left of a node to select it for bulk editing. Click the box at the top of the Map or Conversation View to select all documents and nodes in the thread for editing. Alternatively, use the selector tool (see below for details) to select node groupings. You can also hold down the Control key to individually select several nodes.
Selector tool
Use the selector tool to draw and select any portion of a thread in the map view. Selections are outlined in orange in the map view, and the conversation view now lists all the unique content of the selected emails. The header in the map view shows the count of nodes and documents, while the header in the conversation view shows the count for the selected nodes and documents. Use this selector tool to increase the speed of navigating from branch to branch when reviewing or bulk editing. When messages are selected and outlined in orange, check the "select all" checkbox in the map or conversation view to select only the highlighted nodes. Click the EDIT button to bulk edit the selected documents.
EDIT button
Select nodes, then click EDIT to display the Bulk Update modal window.
Bulk Update modal window
When you click EDIT, the Bulk Update modal window displays three sections: Mass Edit Summary, Propagation Options, and Bulk Update Fields. Make your choices, then click SAVE to apply these fields to the selected documents. Refresh the view to see the field tag (on the left of the map view) that now apply to the documents. The Propagation Options section shows a single choice, yes/no, and multi-choice fields. These are smart propagation options starting with Emails, as the thread viewer is built primarily to review emails. We can propagate to duplicate spares (usually a good idea) and to attachments. Select the toggles of the fields to edit. To select more fields, click Bulk Update Fields.
Emails |
Adds bulk field updates to emails. The most common reason to toggle this option off is if you want to add the coding only to attachments or duplicate attachments and not emails. |

Bulk Update Fields
Use this section to choose additional bulk update fields from a selected Relativity layout.
Layout |
The values in the Layout drop-down match the available layouts in the Relativity layout pane. The layout remains "sticky" between sessions and is only visible to the current user with MA bulk edit permissions. When you select a layout in the bulk edit modal window, all editable read-write single-choice, multiple-choice, and yes/no fields are added to your available fields. Selecting a different layout in the drop-down will update the available fields to those on that layout. To select additional fields, you can use "All Editable Fields" at the bottom of the list, which show all editable single-choice, multiple-choice, and yes/no fields on all available layouts. |
Fields |
Fields are only available to users with read/write permissions for the selected layout. |
Selected Field(s) |
Add selected fields. The field order is the reflected order on the Relativity Layout. Toggle a field "on" to enable edits to that field in the modal window. |
